Your data is the life-blood of your business, so it is imperative that you follow a solid process for backing it up. This process should be automatic and should not rely upon any one person remembering to “do it” each day, other than changing the tape. We recommend that you have 3 layers of protection for your data.

The first layer of your system backup should be within the server itself. The hard drive in your server should be “mirrored” to protect against any hardware failures that might be encountered with the hard drive itself.

Secondly, we recommend a regularly scheduled “image” be taken of your server’s entire hard drive. This image not only contains a separate copy of your data, but it also contains a copy of all of the programs, applications and settings on the hard drive. These images can be stored on an external device or on another hard drive within the server.

Lastly, the data should be copied to some form of removable media and taken off-site. If your business burns to the ground this will be the only copy of your data available to rebuild your business. It is very, very important that a copy of all of your data is kept off-site each and every night.
